JOURNEY TO LASTA:
The journey begins when Tsegaye, a driven and passionate musician leaves his two children and family and embarks on a search of his childhood friend, Kirubel. Kirubel embraces his friend's presence and brings along a shy, yet talented drummer named Teferi. These three embark on a journey of a musical mission that could bring modern Ethiopian music to the World.
Falls, triumphs, and rude awakenings ultimately test their faith, friendship, and honor as they begin the journey of a lifetime. Filled with rhythm and colorful characters, Journey to Lasta brings an inspiring story of the "underdog" and vividly paints an honest and vibrant portrayal of the immigrant experience.
The film also features the amazing sounds of Lasta Sound, Quinto Sol, Chakra, Upground and the legendary Ras Michael.
About LASTA:
Lasta is a small peaceful village in Ethiopia where once great civilization flourished, where Saint Lalibela created magnificent rock hewed churches and where one can hear sweet melodies from the secluded mountains of Lasta Lalibela.
In our film, the word "lasta" is used as a "state of mind" where the band uses the spirit of Lasta to ultimatley create unique, new world music where they fuse the old traditional arrangements with the beats of the west.

Bob Marley & Friends - Documentary 4 yrs in the making due out soon..........
It took Saul Swimmer four years to piece together footage from fans to create "Bob Marley & Friends," a documentary to be shown at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach on March 9 as part of the Miami International Film Festival.
He rolled proceeds from an earlier musical documentary, "Queen - We Will Rock You," into this project and added some personal funds.
The documentary required cooperation from fans across the world and the assent of the Marley estate, controlled by 11 survivors. The filmmaker said he paid tens of thousands of dollars in royalties.
"Finding and collecting footage was the first phase," said Mr. Swimmer. "Then the Marley heirs all wanted a say. They wanted their input. There are the children, their mother, his widow. We had to satisfy a lot of people without compromising the picture."
Twenty-five songs accompany the footage, including four performed by Marley, three by contemporary Pete Tosh and another by Marley's children. Unraveling the intellectual property rights in the songs proved a challenge, said Mr. Swimmer.
"I made a deal with the estate, and I went through the office," he said. "The songs are in a different bracket of royalty if they have already been re-recorded. The Marleys still wanted to OK every use of a song, but they seemed very happy with the end product."

Redemption Song
Based on the life of Jamaican actress Esther Anderson
(Bobs last girlfriend before he passed away), and her involvement with the developement of Island Records. The film is to be shot in Jamaica, London and Hollywood and  is to be directed by Kasi Lemons. it is believed that talks are being held with Michelle Rodriguez, Matt Cedano and James Spader to play prominent roles. Aston 'Familyman' Barret is supposedly doing some of the music for it.
"Being back in LA after all these years is very exciting. There's a new breed of filmmakers who know about Jamaica and our music. They're willing to take part in the film and some directors have shown interest in building sets. It is a nice feeling to know that although years have passed the door is still open to me as an artist and filmmaker", said Esther.

Man Dem Nor Glady'o (People Are Not Happy)
Man Dem Nor Glady'O is an hour long documentary that explores how the
United Nations and other international supporting bodies dealt with
the symptoms of the war in Sierra Leone, whilst simultaneously
failing to deal with the causes. The guns have been silenced, yet a
lack of infrastructure, good governance and access to basic needs may
prove the igniting factors of future conflict. Man Dem Nor Glady'O was
filmed on location in Sierra Leone and gives the viewer a stark
insight into the real lives and trauma of the conflict - and beyond.
Speaking in an interview, Blagrove stated that Man Dem Nor Glady?O which is Creole for The People Are Not Happy, is a documentary about how the United Nations and other international supporting bodies dealt with the consequences of war in Sierra Leone but failed to deal with the causes.
According to Blagrove, although the guns are presently silent, the issues of poverty, corruption and bad governance are still endemic and may yet again be the igniting factors of a future conflict.
The release of this film is especially relevant in its documentation
of the presidential campaigns for the forthcoming 2007 elections.
Set to be aired at a London Movie Theatre on August 11th 2006.

The film focuses on one Harlem apartment as a cultural place that attracts, poets, musicians and wanderers. The artists of 110 Morningside represent the radical, non-commercial edge of this movement. They meet intimately in a living room and express their 1st amendment rights without fear of misrepresentation, censorship or racial bias.

Who Shot the Sheriff? - Directed By Alan Miles
(not to be confused with "I shot the sheriff" marley film)
Tells the story of one of the most exciting mass movements in British history.
The film itself features interviews and unseen footage of artists from the Rock Against Racism (RAR) movement of the 1970s and the Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) movement today including The Clash, The Libertines, Misty In Roots, The Specials, Ms Dynamite and Pete Doherty.
The film tracks the rise of racism and the National Front in Britain during the 1970s?and how a generation, black and white, fought back against the Nazi threat. It includes lots of rarely seen archive footage from the punk and RAR era. This includes the famous 1978 Carnival in east London?s Victoria Park where 100,000 marched to the show headlined by The Clash and Tom Robinson Band.
As well as documenting a great political and musical movement, Who Shot the Sheriff? links the struggle to stop the National Front in the 1970s with campaigns like Unite Against Fascism aiming to stop the likes of the fascist British National Party gaining ground in Britain today. (Out Soon)

Who Killed Bob Marley?

**The word is that this conspiracy theory doesn't hold much weight, make up your own minds.........

Dreadlock Rock:
Is an intimate diary of one white man's immersion in the music and culture of Jamaica. Jack Miller, a Kansas City singer/songwriter/musician discovered reggae in the 70s, journeying to Kingston initially in 1978, dodging burning tires in the midst of gas riots, to record with luminaries like Sly & Robbie, the Mighty Diamonds, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Fully Fullwood and others.? In Southern California, Jack and groups like the Rebel Rockers and the International Reggae All-Stars were missionaries to Orange County and its environs, helping establish Jah Music as a major force. Moving to the Big Island of Hawaii in the mid-80s, he continued to spread the message. Two years ago he returned to Jamaica and gathered the above mentioned foundation musicians for a new series of sessions, a quarter of a century on.  The result is a moving, 72 minute journey through love-saturated riddim-driven moments, like the impromptu a capella riffing of Fully, Tony and Santa of the Soul Syndicate on "Harvest Uptown Famine Downtown." Also featured are Marty Dread and Willie Nelson, over one of Miller's most pleasing melodies. Like a lucky fly on the wall, we're witnessing along with Jack the joys of discovery, and lasting friendships.

Roots, Rock, Reggae
We all know Jerremy Marre's legendary documentary by this name, i recently came across this documentary being sold in Japan, it is a re-release of the original and aparently doesn't contain any additional footage like i first thought, but i don't recognise some of them clips in the trailer or some of there screen shots, but was assured it was the same, comes with a poster and written interview with jeremy marre, soon to be re-released in the UK i think. They have certainly promoted this well in Japan with t-shirts, hats+badges etc.

A Winter Tale - By Frances-Anne Solomon (100mins)
"Frances-Anne Solomon's A Winter Tale is a disturbingly accurate and timely portrayal of the gun violence plaguing the black community in Toronto. Adapted from the critically acclaimed screenplay and shot on location in a Caribbean area of Parkdale, the story begins with gunshots ringing out into the night. But somehow the bullet's intended target, a filthy, no-good drug dealer escapes harm—and instead the bullet claims the life of a nine-year-old boy.
To make matters worse, the stricken community, too stunned and deeply saddened to face the facts try to turn a blind eye to the tragedy and move on with daily life. But Gene, a social worker refuses to accept his neighbours' apathy about the child’s death. Realizing the only way to overcome the violence in the community and deal with the emotional trauma, grief and guilt, he struggles to get his friends to talk about their feelings. However, their inertia and initial unwillingness to communicate prove to be his greatest challenge. Anger, fear and frustration permeate the community that has taken an unwritten code of silence."

Deep Roots
I'm putting up this entry again because i believe there may be 2x seperate releases of this, i'm in the process of investigating this and i'm trying to find out what went wrong with previous failed release dates but Lace International don't want to comment all they could tell me is that it is still being released by them on the 20th August 2007 as a 2x dvd set with the 6x episodes.
The other release that i've come across is from MVD scheduled for release on 17th July 2007, this is just parts 1+2 which will be on 1x dvd, i have no more info on the rest of the episodes or when they will be released but will post up here soon as i hear anything. It certainly is a bit of a mystery as to whats going on here as it seems very strange for 2 different companies to be releasing the same dvd, and i'm wondering wether both companies know of each others release!  lets just hope that this doesn't lead to yet more delays.....
here is the new dvd cover for the MVD release:

Vintage Reggae Bash: Brooklyn 1983
(Due for Release: 8th July 2007)

Now this looks very nice, don't let the cover deceive you, a vintage 1983 concert which is pretty unheard of now to be released on dvd, great!! just check out the artists, Big Youth, Roman Stewart, Delroy Wilson, Max Romeo+loads more...
i'm really going to look forward to this one.
"This DVD consists of footage from an incredible Reggae festival held at the historical Empire Roller Skating Center in Brooklyn, NY circa 1983. It includes sets from such legendary artists as Big Youth, Leroy Sibbles, Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, Tinga Stewart, Roman Stewart, The Blues Busters - Lloyd Campbell and Phillip James, and Max Romeo. The 30,000-square-foot venue, a go-to spot for skate-world renegades in the early 70s, was a de facto community center where teenagers came after school and families spent the weekend. It was the perfect place to host such a historically important music event such as this." - MVD

Today, in a region still reeling from the shock waves of disaster, and still working away from its torrid history, Kali Boom rises above the vices of depression and poverty. He emanates a musical rhythm and spirit that is rooted in--and revitalizes--the island's connections to Jamaica, and Africa. He is planting the much needed seeds of identity in Bluefields, as the island continues to find itself. We will be documenting the whole project from its foundation to its successful growth. This film will be the story of our and Kali Boom's attempt to set up Bluefield's first ever recording studio....."

This is a great new documentary all from a womens perspective, which gives a real insight into the world of dancehall, what makes this film different is that the whole documentary is told by the artists so it gives a true picture of the scene, packed full of interviews from all the big female dancehall artists, this really is a nice film. There is no current dvd release but the film is getting shown in film houses around the world,  future dates include...
X Zimbabwe International Film Festival 24th - 2nd September 2007 Harare
IV International Film Festival Music on film - Film on Music 19th+20th October 2007 Prague/Czech Republic

"For the first time the feature length documentary film QUEENS OF SOUND – A Herstory of Reggae and Dancehall" explores the long neglected female side of Reggae and Dancehall music in Jamaica. Three generations of women in the Jamaican music business tell us about their role in past and present, their first steps into the career, their struggle for acceptance in a male-dominated business, their life paths and big success. World-famous musicians such as Marcia Griffiths, Tanya Stephens, Sasha, Cecile, Chevelle Franklyn, Queen Ifrica, Macka Diamond and Lady G - just to name a few, as well as women behind the scenes, f.e. Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah (Rastafari activist, film-maker, author, journalist, broadcaster), Nordia Rose (hottest music video director in Jamaica), Jade Lee (artist management) or Sandra Joy Alcott (founder of JAFA – Jamaica Association of Female Artists), give us an understanding of Jamaica’s music scene  from a female point of view. The documentary highlights via in-depth interviews and spectacular performances the social, economic, religious, textual and individual aspects of Reggae and Dancehall culture. QUEENS OF SOUND was mainly filmed in Kingston/Jamaica as well as at concerts in Austria and Italy."

Tru Reggae Story
A great documentary produced by a group of young film makers in London . The film was made over a four week period as part of a summer research project, 10 black youngsters aged between 12 and 17 carried out extensive research and were trained in website technology and film making. At the end of their project they produced their own website, a CD rom and a ground breaking documentary, all of this was made possible by Dr Lez Henry, Director of NuBeyond, historian and former dancehall deejay, who setup the project. The results are inspiring, they interview lots of the old UK sound system artists including people like: Maxi Priest, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Dennis Bovell, Macca B, D.Rowe, Muscle Head, Papa Benji, Asher Senator, Lorna Gee, Robert Allen, Mickey Simpson, Papa Levi, Top Cat, Tenor Fly, Suster Audrey, Tony Ruff Cut, Sir Lloyd, Blacker Dread,Dirty desi, Masai, Mykaell Riley, Johnny T, Cinderella, Hugh Francis, Percy Diamonds, Mikey Spratt, Poleon, Dr.Vibes, Rey Bowen and Lezlee Lyrix.
As you can see the amount of people included in this film is amazing, for a 4 week project i think these guys have done an amazing job, it's a great example to others of what can be achieved in such a short space of time.
Please Help Support them by visiting there website below by clicking on the picture, and purchasing a copy of the film via NuBeyond.

SYPNOSIS:
"In the 1970s the Rastafari movement grew from national scorn and disfavour into an internationally-recognized religious expression, mainly because of the international popularity of the music created by the movement’s faithful. Among these faithful, one man stood out and became a national hero and icon.
The times in which he lived were eventful and unusual, as the socialist politics of the ruling PNP government clashed directly with not only the conservatism of its opposition JLP party, but especially with the diametrically different lifestyle, hairstyle and beliefs of the Rastafari movement.
At the height of the 70s, it seemed that Rastafari held more power over the people than the government. Yet in reality, no leader stepped forward to assume the mantle of power and whenever this seemed possible, efforts were made to discredit and destroy any who seemed to have leadership qualities.
It is against this background that the story of JOSEPH is told, offering a fictional hero in a story that turns history on its end, and wonders:
What would have happened, if …. or COULD have happened, if…."

DREADHEADS: Portraits Of A Subculture
(Producer/director Steven R Hurlburt)
New dvd now available online, which looks at people who have Dreadlocks.
"Experience the counterculture soul of Woodstock’s controlled anarchy; the earthiness of reggae hallmark The Harder They Come. But always return to the essential focus on the dreadheads, and their devotion to the music that entrances them. Neither stargazing nor melodrama, the documentary peers close-up into the lives of seekers after a communal high. Dreadheads, says Hurlburt, is ultimately “about America - both praising and critiquing it - and these kids as Americans, good ones, actually, who embody American independence, a DIY work ethic, and a desire to live on a frontier of their own making.” Not a concert film, nor mere record of a moment, the movie embraces a vibrant subculture: a flawed peripatetic Utopia wherein the kids are very much all right."

Joe Higgs
I heard about a new documentary project earlier this week two guys are working on, it's going to be all about reggae legend Joe Higgs, so it was a nice to hear about this as nobody has ever made a film about him before and he certainly deserves one, some of you will remember his excellent performance in the great documentary Roots, Rock, Reggae by Jeremy Marre where he sang "There is a Reward". Joe played a big part in Reggae history and it will be nice to hear all about the Joe Higgs story in the new film. The film is a relatively new project so i don't think we are going to see if for some time but at least we have something to look forward too!

The Making Of Reggae Blue
This is a nice video that features a Reggae/Soul artist called Rusty Zinn, he has teamed up with Reggae Legend Full Fullwood (Soul Syndicate) for his latest album made earlier this year and hear is a little video they made about the album. Founding member of Soul Syndicate, Fully Fullwood (Soul Syndicate), talks about his days in Jamaica when he helped create the reggae sound and says that Rusty's lyrics are reminiscent of those same topics that early reggae artists wrote about.
I'm not sure if there is a longer version of the film but i'm in the process of trying to find that out.
Enjoy......

             FREEDOM ROAD (CD+DVD)
(Available On DVD)
This is a wonderful new documentary on Bob Marley, the last few bob doc's we have seen haven't be great but this one is a breath of fresh air, below is a short review:
"A truely Excellent documentary on Bob Marley, this is one of the first Bob Marley documentaries on over a decade which includes new never before seen footage of Bob, the film does include clips from other older bob documentaries but most of the content is new.
The film gives great insight into Bob Marley and his life, with interviews from his ex-girlfriend Esther Andserson who speaks about her time with bob which was a very happy time for her, she tells us about how the last 3-4 years of his life after he had his toe injury during a football match, how the people around him didn;t care for bob as much as they could of, she explains how the people with him should have given bob more help (one person in particular she was very angry with) and persuaded him to get professional help for his toe wound, his bandages stayed on for several years, bob did get some treatment in Bavaria but this treatment was not recognised by western medical professionals, and the documentary describes it as a sort of cowboy treatment he received out there. An artists of Bobs magnitude surely should have been receiving only the best medical care at this time, as we all know sadly the cancer in bobs toe spread around his body and was the cause of his early death."

His mission is to spread peace and love through his music, the multi talented Jah Levi holds advanced degrees in ethnomusicology, electronics, engineering, medicine and martial arts as well as certification as a master of Luthiery (musical instrument building) with in depth knowledge of over 200 stringed and percussive instruments. He has released over 20 albums and has worked with some of reggaes finest. "This DVD, filmed in 2002 at Moss Camp in Kingston, Jamaica and featuring the Mighty Diamonds, Pat Kelly, Leroy Sibbles, and Lloyd Parks, has been assembled to showcase an elegant display of incredible Reggae performances. The Mighty Diamonds are truly diamonds of the scene, with great voices and excellent lyrics. Here they give us a fabulous show, and the audience loves every bit of their performance. Pat Kelly, one of the greatest voices in Reggae, also puts on a terrific performance that excites the crowd. Leroy Sibbles and Lloyd Parks follow suit in performances that can only be described as memorable."

Finally we have been able to bring you this film on DVD, this film has always been almost impossible to find and plenty of us have searched for it with no luck, now we are very pleased to be able to release this on dvd for your viewing pleasure.  Buying a copy will help support the ReggaeFilms website and will help enable us to bring you more great hard to find films in the future. Below is some info on the film:

Now a Rastafarian, her view of England after her ten years absence is expressed through six interviews with Black and White Britons who give their views on the tragedy of negative race relations in England and the resulting rise in Rastafari views among Black youth.

WORD, SOUND + POWER
Due out 22nd Jan.2008
This great reggae classic is due for another release, this time by major dvd distributor MVD, the dvd is due out 22nd Jan. 2008.  I wonder if it will include the much talked about Hugh Mundell footage which they had trouble licensing for the previous release, we will have to wait and see i guess. Either way MVD seem to be doing a great job recently in taking on these reggae classics, they now have quite a nice reggae library.
If you have never seen Word, Sound+Power then this truely is a must, you cannot afford to miss it! the film look at the band, The Soul Syndicate with fully fulwood, these guys are some of reggaes founders, the film is packed with beautiful camera shots and the film quality is just as good if not better than most of todays dvd releases, how they managed to get such good quality i'm not sure but they've done an excellent job.
Don't miss it....

DEEP ROOTS Vol.2 (Parts 3+4)
Due on dvd 22nd Jan.2008
At long last, we have vol.2 of one of the best Reggae Documentaries ever made. There was alot of confusion with the dvd release of this film but eventually MVD released Vol.1 earlier this year which was parts 1+2 of the 6 part series, now we have Vol.2 due out 22nd Jan.
Originally aired in the early 80's on Channel 4, UKs alternative TV channel, the film has always been very popular among reggae collectors, for years bad quality copies circulated with the time-codes stamped on the screen, but now we get a nice crisp picture for everyone to enjoy.
Great work MVD, and lets not forget a massive thanks to Howard Johnson, director of this series, who is responsible for some of the best reggae films ever made.

We are including this one again, we did list it earlier this year but it's now had a new dvd release on a large scale, also with a nice new cover! Heres the story again for those of you that missed it last time:

Tsegaye is a driven musician who leaves his wife and children behind and moves to California in search for a long lost childhood friend, Kirubel. When he finds him, the two, along with Kirubel’s drummer friend, Teferi, embark upon a journey to bring Ethiopian and Reggae music to the world. Falls, triumphs, and commitment test their friendships, relationships, and honor. Filled with rhythm and colorful characters, Journey To Lasta paints a vivid picture of an Ethiopian community in America.
LASTA is a small picturesque, peaceful village in Ethiopia where once great civilization flourished. This is where Saint Lalibela created magnificent rock hewed churches and where one can hear sweet melodies from the secluded mountains of Lasta Lalibela, the birthplace of Ethiopian music."
